Short answer: The safest animal parts for dogs are single-ingredient, fully digestible chews made from 100% real meat — things like bully sticks, beef tendons, beef trachea, and ears. Skip rawhide and anything with additives. Match the chew to your dog's size and chewing style, and always supervise. That's the whole game.
I'm Preston Smith, co-founder of Bully Sticks Central. We've sold a lot of animal-part chews over the years, and the questions I get most are always the same: which parts are actually safe, which ones are just marketing, and how do I pick the right one? Here's the plain version.
What Counts as an "Animal Part" Chew?
Animal-part chews are exactly what they sound like — a single piece of an animal, dried into a chew. That includes muscle (bully sticks, tendons), cartilage (trachea, ears), and connective tissue. Because they come from one source with nothing added, the good ones are 100% natural and single-ingredient. That's the opposite of a processed treat with a long ingredient label.
The reason dogs love them is simple: chewing is a natural instinct, and these chews give that instinct a real outlet. The American Kennel Club notes that appropriate chewing supports dental health and helps relieve boredom and anxiety (AKC).
Which Animal Parts Are Safe for Dogs?
These are the ones we stand behind, all fully digestible and made from 100% real meat:
- Bully sticks — a long-lasting muscle chew, high in protein and low in fat. They're our flagship for a reason. If you're new to them, start with our complete guide to bully sticks.
- Beef tendons — tough, sinewy, and great for a dog that likes to work at a chew while keeping teeth clean.
- Beef trachea — a softer, cartilage-rich chew that's naturally a source of glucosamine and chondroitin. More on whether it's a fit for your dog in our guide to trachea chews.
- Ears — a lighter, quicker chew, good for smaller dogs or as an everyday treat.
What ties these together is that they're all single-ingredient. If you want the full case for why that matters, we broke it down in our single-ingredient chews guide.
What About Rawhide?
We don't sell rawhide, and we don't recommend it. Rawhide is a byproduct of the leather industry, often chemically treated, and it doesn't break down well — it can swell in the stomach and cause blockages. VCA Animal Hospitals warns that rawhide carries real risks of choking and digestive obstruction (VCA). Everything we make is no rawhide, and that's a line we won't cross.
How Do I Choose the Right Chew?
Three things to weigh:
- Size and hardness. Pick a chew your dog can't swallow whole and that suits their jaw strength. A power chewer needs a denser chew than a senior or a puppy.
- Quality and source. Look for single-ingredient chews that are responsibly sourced. Ours are ethically sourced from grass-fed American and Argentinean farms, with no chemicals or fillers.
- Variety. Rotating chews keeps your dog interested and covers different textures — a firmer bully stick one day, a softer trachea the next.
Whatever you choose, supervise your dog while they chew and take away any small end pieces. The ASPCA recommends active supervision with any chew or treat (ASPCA).
The Bottom Line
Animal-part chews are one of the most natural, satisfying things you can give a dog — as long as you stick to single-ingredient, fully digestible options and skip rawhide. That's what we build our whole catalog around, and it's 100% high-quality guaranteed. Pick the right size, supervise, and your dog gets a chew that's good for their teeth, their instincts, and their health.
